WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SAVE OUR OCEANS
The damages to the Ocean Planet are dire,
but it’s not too late. Taking small measures
in our daily life can vastly improve the
ocean’s outlook.
TO CONTROL RUNOFF AND EROSION
–Drive less, walk, bike and use car pools or
public transportation.
–Recycle used motor oil and antifreeze.
–Re-sod barren land with grass or replace
with native plants, and divert water from
pavement onto grass.
–Choose the right fertilizer and use it
conservatively.
–Don’t over water.
–Use non-phosphate detergents
TO REDUCE MARINE DEBRIS
–Recycle glass, aluminum, plastic and paper.
–Buy recycled products.
–Never release balloons outside.
–Break or cut all plastic rings.
–If you bring plastic on a boat or to a beach dispose of it properly.
TO TAKE CARE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS
–Use fewer pesticides; store and dispose of properly.
–Drain swimming pools and dispose of treatment
chemicals properly.
–Use battery and oil recycling and household
hazardous waste collection programs.
–Use rechargeable batteries.
TO CONSERVE WATER AND ENERGY
–Take shorter showers; install efficient heads,
faucet aerators, and toilets; fix leaky toilets
and faucets.
–Turn thermostats down; and turn off appliances
and lights when not in use.
–Run dishwasher and washing machines only with
full loads; isolate hot-water heaters.
–Lear more about xeriscaping—landscaping to
conserve water use.
TO TAKE ACTION
–Adopt and clean up a beach or stream.
–Write to your local policy makers and newspaper editors.
–Join a local citizens’ environmental program.
–Teach your children and friends how important the oceans
are to our survival…
